The eldest of six children, Gerard was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1928, the son of a beautiful Chinese artist mother and an Irish intellectual father. With his Anglo-Chinese background, his childhood in Malaysia and Singapore, and his classical Chinese education, it is hardly surprising that Gerard's work combines such multiplicity of Western and Eastern influences. Since he won an international mural competition in 1955, which launched his artistic career and first brought him to Barcelona, Spain, Gerard has developed a unique style that incorporates dynamic Western techniques with the delicacy and sensitivity of the East. beauty and power. Primitive art forms and forgotten civilizations are his inspiration. A deeply spiritual man, Gerard has made pilgrimages to various shrines and temples throughout Central Asia. As director of the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art wrote: "Henderson paints with a Mongol ferocity but instead of a wild assault on the canvas, his work is characterized by a delicate refinement of line and detail; his paintings are charged with a passionate effort to capture primordial force, yet they retain a dreamlike harmony of color and surface texture."
